Are we really allowed to do that? Can we really send our garbage to the U.S. and they'll take it?? Is this not the greatest news ever? Why are they willing to take our freaking garbage? What's in it for them?
I've got a better idea. Let's ship all this crap back to where it came from. China!
Apparently the Metro officials are being forced to seek alternatives because the Cache Creek landfill is expected to be full by 2010 (actually I heard earlier that it was end of 2008). The three alternative landfill sites; two in the B.C. Interior and one in Washington State, are expected to step forward.
According to CBC.ca, "We've been trying to get something going in the Interior for about almost a decade and it hasn't worked out, and the board finally said, 'Enough already, we're going to give up on the Interior and find other alternatives,'" said Metro Vancouver waste committee vice-chairman Peter Ladner.
Sending the garbage to Washington is a short-term solution, said Ladner. Eventually, the city hopes to burn the garbage to generate power.
You'd think most Canadians would be happy about shipping their garbage to the States, right? I know I am, but Mayor John Ranta doesn't see it that way. "From our perspective, waste represents jobs in the Interior," he said. I just think it's funny that he actually WANTS the garbage in his backyard in exchange for money {jobs}. I mean - it's like doing a deal with the devil.
"We've enjoyed the benefit of those jobs since 1989. The urgency surrounding the decision that's contemplated is not there, and we should be trying to protect jobs in British Columbia for British Columbians to the greatest extent possible."
What's even funnier is that CBC.ca is reporting that the city of Vancouver is trying to reduce waste as much as possible, and look at possibility of burning garbage to generate energy.
Reduce waste - is that an option when you're trying to find a new landfill? Ok everyone in Vancouver, try and make less garbage. I know we've been saying it for years, please recycle and make less trash but now were serious. You really have to make less waste.
Ummm... hello?????
